Session 2: Analog Basics

What makes electronics work? Tools, Rules, and Design Flow!

Summary:

In this class we dicuss how electrons move through a wire, analogous comparisons to water through pipes. We then discuss how to use electronic behaviour to build components, passive circuit components (resistors, capacitors, and inductors - which are inherent properties of all electronic components & wires) and active circuit components (transistors! building digital Logic gates with analog components). Then, we move onto device models, netlisting, clock distribution, and the Schmitt trigger (a useful circuit for “debouncing” input signals into processors).

Homework assignments:

  1. Modify the AND gate netlist to create an OR gate instead Hint: Swap the series/parallel arrangement of transistors
  2. Schmitt trigger analysis: Look up a CMOS Schmitt trigger schematic and identify which transistors set the upper vs lower threshold
  3. Optional: Build a transistor circuit in TinkerCAD.
