Session 3: Software security / Memory safety¶
Class¶
What I’ve learnt¶
Basic words(but it’s really important)¶
I’ve learnt really basic words and system for the computer function.
| Words | meaning | notes |
|---|---|---|
| bit | smallest piece of information that computer can store. electric charge(1) or nothing(0) | 0 or 1 |
| byte | It represents $2^8$ = 256 distinct values, from 0 to 255 | 1 byte = 8 bits |
| hexadecimal | decimal is unwieldy for the binary system(computer uses) and hexadecimal is easy to recognize the number. |
Homework¶
1. Install QEMU¶
This QEMU is already installed in the VM, so I just check it.
This is a protection system using keys, public key and private key. Only people who have the correct key can access the document or messages.
2. Download the Protostar exploit virtual machine¶
I downloaded the Protostar from the site and start the QEMU.

Code Example¶
Use the three backticks to separate code.
// the setup function runs once when you press reset or power the board
void setup() {
// initialize digital pin LED_BUILTIN as an output.
pinMode(LED_BUILTIN, OUTPUT);
}
// the loop function runs over and over again forever
void loop() {
digitalWrite(LED_BUILTIN, HIGH); // turn the LED on (HIGH is the voltage level)
delay(1000); // wait for a second
digitalWrite(LED_BUILTIN, LOW); // turn the LED off by making the voltage LOW
delay(1000); // wait for a second
}
